Most of us get swept up in the hype of digital noise—the ping of our phones, the constant notifications, the mindless scrolling. Like the role of a master to a dog, except now that our devices are mastering us humans. I immediately want to check my phone when I hear the ping. I’ll open the text and then somehow end down a rabbit hole of information I didn’t even need to know. And let’s be honest – it can all get a bit too much!
Don’t get me wrong, embracing the digital world for learning and connection is essential, but finding balance is crucial to avoid mental fatigue, increased stress and difficulty focusing.
That’s why taking a break from all the digital noise is so important. You can reap many benefits from unplugging for a few hours or a full day, and stepping into the real world can enhance your mental wellness. It helps you to reset, re-centre, and return feeling more grounded and present. Trust me, you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel.
Here are some ideas to replace screen time with an IRL experience:
Move your body
Equally important is moving your body. It doesn’t have to be a grand workout or a sweaty gym session; it can be as simple as a walk in the park, a bike ride or a dance to your favourite tune. The goal is to find a good rhythm that releases those feel-good endorphins and connects with your body in a refreshing, not exhausting, way.
Stay curious
Let your mind stay curious. Learning something new – whether it’s a foreign language, a new recipe or a creative hobby sharpens and engages your mind. Learning something new can make a difference as little as 10-15 minutes a day.
Spend time in nature
Get outside and breathe in the fresh air. There’s something grounding about stepping away from the artificial hum of technology and reconnecting with nature. Notice the sounds of the birds calling or the smell of the air after rain (heavenly!) Let the sights and sounds around you remind you of the simple beauty beyond the screen!
Read
Reading, too, can be a form of nourishment for the soul. Whether it’s an enthralling novel you can’t put down or an article that sparks a new idea. Don’t underestimate the power of reading!
Play
Finally, make space for play. It’s easy to forget to play with all the responsibilities, routines and pressures of adulting! But playing a board game or doing a fun activity with a friend or loved one can remind you of the importance of laughter, connection and presence! I feel so lucky that spending time with my toddler lets me tap into that playful, creative side — from building houses out of duplo to crafting.
By weaving these practices into your life – each small yet significant – they can help you slow down, refocus, and find the peace you might have been looking for!
