Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria, is about an hour’s drive from Melbourne CBD. Hanging Rock is an intriguing natural geological formation that came to be from a volcanic eruption, which occurred about 6 million years ago during the Late Miocene Age.
It’s a popular destination for tourists, fitness fanatics, and families alike, offering opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the Rocks, go hiking, and uncover the area’s mystery. In 1901, a group of school girls and their teacher vanished from the region, which has led to many myths and speculations about their disappearance. Some visitors report they can feel an eerie spirit – creepy!
The Hike
The hike to the summit is very scenic. The path leading up to the rock formation is relatively level, but steep with lots of vegetation and picturesque views of the monolithic rocks towering over the bushy landscape. There’s an option to take the steep path or the stairs up to the summit. I’d recommend taking the stairs to give your quads a little workout. The track is about 1.8km (return), which should take the average hiker about 50 mins. However, if you’re tackling the climb more at a more leisurely pace, you’ll likely stop frequently to admire the view and snap a gazillion insta-worthy photos of the stunning scenery.
The hike is a grade 3 – moderate trail. The inclination does get your heart pounding and your breath puffing. However, this trail is a breeze if you’re an avid hiker. Rock climbing may also be a part of the experience at the summit – should you wish to.
The Summit
The summit is about 718 metres above sea level. Plenty of nooks and crannies in the rock formation make exploring fun and great places to stop for selfies. The breathtaking views feature; a canopy of bush, farmland, manicured estates, and a mountain range. Keep your eyes peeled for the lizards – there’s bound to be some sunbathing on the rock somewhere.
What to take
Bring water to keep hydrated. Comfortable, closed-in shoes – some of the rocks are pretty slippery if you decide to explore a little! Pack some sunscreen, a hat and your phone or camera to take photos.
What else?
After you’ve hiked Hanging Rock, there are plenty of spots to have a picnic (including open areas families play cricket on), barbecue, or indulge at the Hanging Rock cafe. There’s a Discovery Centre, which explains the mystery of the missing school girls and the geological and environmental significance of the Rock.
